TSH Increased? Nutrition Matters Along With Medicines!

Have you read in the previous post by Dr. Ravindra Kulkarni about when Thyroid medicines are necessary if TSH is elevated?
Now, let's look at this topic from the perspective of Personalised Nutrition!
Because every individual's diet, lifestyle, and nutritional needs are different.
1. Are you getting enough Protein? Include protein sources like lentils, pulses, milk, curd, paneer, and tofu in your diet. Obtaining the necessary amino acids is important for the production of Thyroid hormones.
2. Pay attention to Iron and Vitamin B12. Deficiency of Iron or Vitamin B12 can cause symptoms like fatigue, weakness, and hair loss. Especially vegetarians should be cautious about the risk of Vitamin B12 deficiency.
3. Are Selenium, Zinc, and Vitamin D supplements necessary? These nutrients play important roles in various bodily functions. However, not every Thyroid patient needs to take these supplements. Decide on supplements based on diet, symptoms, and test results. Taking excessive supplements is not always beneficial!
4. Be cautious about Iodine! Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones. But excess iodine or some “Thyroid Support” supplements can disrupt thyroid function. Do not take high-dose iodine supplements without a doctor's advice.
5. Taking Thyroid medicine? Keep this in mind! Taking Iron and Calcium supplements along with Levothyroxine can reduce the absorption of the medicine. Usually, a gap of about 4 hours is advised. Confirm the correct timing for your medicine with your doctor or pharmacist.
What is Personalised Nutrition? It is not about giving everyone the same Thyroid Diet or supplements!
- Are you getting enough nutrition from your diet? - Which nutrients are deficient? - Are supplements really necessary? - Have Thyroid reports, symptoms, and lifestyle been considered together?
Remember: Proper nutrition can support thyroid health but is not a substitute for necessary thyroid medication. Do not stop or change your medicine dose on your own.
Let's look beyond just the TSH number and focus on your complete nutritional health!
