Feeling Your Heart Palpitations? When to Worry and What to Do
Feeling your heart palpitations? Reports are normal, so should you worry?
What are Palpitations? Feeling your heart beat differently: * Fast * Irregular * Forceful * Or like a skipped beat
This is a symptom, not a disease.
Why do they occur even with normal reports? ECG / Echo might be normal because rhythm changes are temporary and not always caught during a test.
Common causes (in today's lifestyle): * Stress / Anxiety → increased adrenaline → palpitations * Poor sleep → body doesn't calm down * Tea, coffee, alcohol → disturb rhythm * Dehydration → heart works harder * Thyroid imbalance → affects pulse * Acidity / Gas → can cause palpitations
Rhythm causes (arrhythmia - disturbed beats): Sometimes, the rhythm is genuinely altered: * Extra beats (most common) * Irregular rhythm (AF / SVT) * Fast or slow heart rate
Even with a slow heart rate, a forceful beat can be felt after a pause.
When to pay attention? If palpitations are accompanied by: * Dizziness * Shortness of breath * Chest pain * Fainting Then examination is necessary.
What to check? ECG, Holter, Echo, thyroid tests. Not everyone needs everything; the right choice is important.
Most palpitations are not dangerous, but the fear is real. Understanding reduces fear.
What to do? Improve sleep, reduce caffeine, increase water intake. Identify stress, note the pattern.
Palpitations don't always mean heart disease... but without understanding, peace of mind is elusive.
If you frequently experience palpitations... Or have doubts even with normal reports, seek clarity, don't just guess.
