Mitochondria: The Energy Factories of Cells

Mitochondria: The Energy Factories of Cells

In our Inflammation series, we saw that chronic inflammation is behind many lifestyle diseases.

But where does this inflammation begin? The answer lies within the cells of our body.

And there we find Mitochondria.

What are Mitochondria?

Mitochondria are the energy factories within cells.

Just as a city slows down if its power plant shuts down, similarly, if Mitochondria don't function properly, the body's energy production decreases.

How is energy produced? From the food we eat, the body receives: * Glucose * Fatty acids

These components go into Mitochondria and produce ATP – the body's energy currency.

The heart, brain, muscles, and every cell in the body run on this energy.

An important point is that organs requiring more energy have more Mitochondria, especially the heart, brain, and muscles.

So, what's the connection with inflammation?

When Mitochondria don't function properly: * Energy production decreases. * Oxidative stress (chemical stress on cells / oxygen-related damage to cells) increases. * Inflammatory signals in the body increase.

This means that if Mitochondria malfunction, the inflammatory process can begin.

A common observation in OPD: Some people say, "Doctor, I feel very tired, but my reports are almost normal." In such cases, the problem can often be in the body's energy system.

Impact of today's lifestyle: * Reduced physical activity * Processed diet * High sugar intake * Lack of sleep * Constant stress

Gradually, these factors weaken Mitochondria, and chronic inflammation can increase.

Next Post: In the next part, we will look at Oxidative Stress, which is linked to both Mitochondria and inflammation.

To understand inflammation, one must understand cellular energy.

Do you think information about what goes on inside the body should reach as many people as possible? * Yes, definitely * Useful information * Looking forward to the next post
