Metabolism and Muscle: Your Body's Metabolic Engine

Just For Hearts1 min read

Metabolism isn't just about fat; it largely depends on your muscle. Muscle is the body's metabolic engine.

Why is muscle so important?

1. **Muscle = Primary glucose-consuming tissue** When we eat, a large portion of glucose is used by muscles. If you have less muscle, sugar stays in the blood for longer.

2. **Insulin sensitivity depends on muscle** Healthy muscle responds well to insulin. Less muscle means a higher chance of increased insulin resistance. This is very important in early prediabetes.

3. **Muscle preservation in early stages = future protection** In prediabetes, fatty liver, and borderline BP, preserving muscle means stopping metabolic progression. This stage is a golden opportunity for intervention.

4. **Losing muscle in advanced stages is dangerous** In long-standing diabetes and heart disease, muscle loss (sarcopenia) increases. Less muscle means: * Difficult sugar control * Increased fall risk * Slower recovery Here, muscle training becomes even more crucial.

5. **Just looking at weight is wrong** If the scale goes down but muscle also decreases, metabolism slows down. Weight loss ≠ Metabolic health.

6. **Just walking isn't enough** Walking is essential, but without muscle stimulus, long-term insulin protection isn't achieved. Strength stimulus provides metabolic stability.

7. **What happens if you have less muscle?** * Lower resting metabolic rate * Increased fat storage tendency * Higher post-meal sugar spikes * Lower energy levels Metabolism feels sluggish.

8. **How to preserve muscle?** * 2-3 times a week resistance stimulus * Adequate protein intake * Adequate sleep (for muscle repair) * Avoid prolonged inactivity (We will do a detailed post on this separately.)

**My clinical opinion:** When improving metabolism, don't just focus on reducing fat. Preserve muscle. Muscle is metabolic insurance.
