Blood Pressure
The Most Accurate Way to Measure BP at Home
Measuring your Blood Pressure (BP) accurately at home is essential for effective health monitoring. Follow these steps for the most reliable results:
1) Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring. Talking, walking, or stress can raise your BP. Stay calm, then measure.
2) Maintain the correct posture: - Back supported - Feet flat on the floor - Arm resting on a table at heart level This position can reduce variation by 10–15 mmHg.
3) Use the correct cuff size: - A cuff that is too small will give a higher BP reading. - A cuff that is too large will give a lower reading. The cuff that comes with your home BP machine is usually appropriate.
4) Take three readings, not just one: Measure three times at 1-minute intervals. The average of the middle two readings is the most accurate BP.
5) Morning BP is the most important: Measure within 30–60 minutes after waking, before taking medication. High morning BP increases the risk of future heart attack or stroke.
6) Take one set in the evening as well: Routine: Morning (3 readings) + Evening (3 readings) 3–4 days per week is sufficient.
7) Avoid measuring BP immediately after coffee, tea, smoking, or exercise as these can falsely raise BP.
8) Record your readings or use an app: This helps track trends such as morning highs, stress spikes, or medication effects. This information is invaluable for your doctor.
Why is BP tracking important? - It shows the effect of medications. - Helps detect dangerous “silent high BP” early. - Reduces risk of stroke and heart attack. - Identifies where lifestyle changes are needed.
Remember: Checking morning BP is a life-saving habit. Home BP measurement is the most reliable.
