VO₂ Max: The Number That Tells Your True Fitness

VO₂ Max: The Number That Tells Your True Fitness
“I'm young, my reports are normal… So why do I get breathless climbing stairs or walking a short distance?”
Often, the answer lies in your VO₂ max.
What exactly is VO₂ Max?
1. VO₂ max = The amount of oxygen your body can use per minute during exercise. The higher it is, the greater your endurance and stamina.
Two simple, relatable examples:
2. A car with a large engine runs smoothly even uphill → high VO₂ max 3. A car with a small engine gets tired quickly over a short distance → low VO₂ max
How is it measured?
4. A Lab test is the gold standard, but nowadays smartwatches like Apple, Garmin, and Fitbit estimate VO₂ max while walking/running.
What's Normal, What's Low?
5. Generally: * Men: 35–45 is good * Women: 27–38 is good If it's lower than this, functional fitness is considered low.
Why do I get breathless even without illness?
6. Even without heart or lung disease, a sedentary lifestyle → low VO₂ max → quick breathlessness This is very common nowadays.
Why is VO₂ Max so important?
7. If your VO₂ max is low: → Trekking, stairs, exercise become difficult → You get tired quickly in daily tasks → It increases future cardiac-respiratory risk
Special point for Elderly / Cardio-Diabetic individuals:
8. Along with VO₂ max, check resting heart rate, walking pace, and recovery time on your smartwatch. Don't ignore getting breathless too quickly while walking, a continuously decreasing VO₂ max, or delayed recovery. Discuss it with your doctor.
Can it be improved? How long does it take?
9. Brisk walking, cycling, interval training If done 4–5 days a week, a difference is felt in 6–8 weeks, and objective improvement is seen in 3–6 months.
Let's accept a reality:
10. A normal BMI doesn't necessarily mean excellent fitness. What's truly important is how capable your body is when performing tasks, and VO₂ max tells you that.
