What Happens When You Eat a Mango? A Doctor's Perspective

Just For Hearts1 min read

The phrase "What happens when you eat a mango, doctor?" is commonly heard in OPDs every summer.

I never completely ban mangoes. The taste, joy, and memories are also part of life.

However, understanding portion control, discipline, and the body's limits is very important.

A recent incident from last week still lingers in my mind.

A diabetic patient over 75 years old repeatedly ignored advice and continued to eat excessive amounts of mangoes.

He used to laugh and say, "Who knows if I'll be able to eat mangoes next year or not..."

Then suddenly his health deteriorated.

His sugar level was over 500.

He developed a chest infection and pneumonia.

The best antibiotics were started, but his body did not respond well.

His condition worsened, he required a ventilator, and unfortunately, we could not save him.

As a doctor, do you know what hurts the most in such situations?

Not the illness itself...

But often, despite doctors, family, and caregivers explaining, some patients are not willing to listen to their own bodies.

In Diabetes, the question is not "Should I eat mango or not?"

The real question is, "Do we accept the limits of our body?"

Because some mistakes show up in reports...

And some directly land you in the ICU.

Some things can be controlled with medicines...

But some require self-control.
