Don't Wait If You Have Chest Pain: Heart Attack Awareness
"Don't wait... it might just be gas." This phrase often proves costly during a heart attack.
In OPD and ICU, one truth is repeatedly seen:
When chest pain begins, the patient stops, the family hesitates, and precious time slips away.
1. When a Heart attack starts, the body does not tell you to stop... it urges you to take action.
• A clot forms in an artery • Blood flow suddenly decreases
From that moment, the heart muscle stops receiving oxygen.
2. The first 2–3 hours are the "golden window."
Clinical practice and guidelines say: If the artery is opened within 90–120 minutes, much of the muscle can be saved.
After 3–6 hours, damage becomes irreversible, meaning every hour causes more muscle loss.
3. The biggest mistake is to "wait and watch."
"Don't wait... it might be gas..." "It's night... I'll go in the morning..."
These decisions seem small, but during this time the clot stabilizes and damage increases.
4. Pain decreasing does not mean the danger is gone.
Sometimes pain lessens, but the blockage remains, and the next attack could be bigger and more dangerous.
5. What is the cost of delay?
If you arrive on time: - Angioplasty can be done promptly - Heart's pumping power (EF) is preserved - The patient can live a normal life
If delayed: - Muscle damage is permanent - EF drops to 30–40% - Lifelong medications, restrictions, and repeated hospital admissions
The decision takes hours... The consequences last a lifetime.
6. In ICU, we provide treatment, but the outcome is often already determined.
How quickly the patient arrives is the biggest factor.
Medicines and machines are available... But time is different.
7. Urgency does not mean panic... Urgency means making the right decision at the right time.
If you have chest pain, do not "observe"... act immediately.
8. Understand this clearly:
In a heart attack, "time is muscle" is not just a phrase, it is the reality we see daily in ICU.
When chest pain starts, the clock starts ticking for you.
Pause for a moment... and answer: If someone at your home has chest pain, what will you do - wait or take immediate action?
Write your answer in the comments; your response may guide someone's decision.
This information is not just for you... it might help someone at the right time because of you.
