What Should Heart Failure Patients Monitor Daily? (As Important as Medication)

Just For Hearts2 min read

Heart Failure means the heart cannot pump or receive enough blood according to the body's needs.

Heart Failure requires daily management; it's not a one-day illness but needs to be understood, cared for, and managed daily.

Let's look at 10 things to monitor daily:

1. Weight: Every morning, before meals. A gain of 1-2 kg in 2-3 days indicates fluid retention in the body.

2. Blood Pressure (BP): Both very low or very high BP are problematic. Dizziness, weakness, and a heavy head feeling can be due to changes in BP.

3. Heart Rate: If it feels very fast or irregular, keep a record. Do not ignore it if it's high even at rest.

4. Breath: Are you more breathless today while walking compared to yesterday? Do you have to stop while climbing stairs? This is an early warning sign.

5. Breathing while sleeping: Do you need to use more pillows? Do you suddenly wake up at night due to shortness of breath? This is a symptom of increased congestion.

6. Swelling in feet/ankles: Is there more swelling in the evening? Does pressing leave a pit? This indicates fluid retention.

7. Urine: Is your urine output less during the day? Do you urinate more at night? This gives an idea of medication effectiveness and fluid balance.

8. Appetite: Reduced appetite or feeling full quickly can also be a subtle symptom of worsening Heart Failure.

9. Fatigue: More fatigue than usual? Things that were easy before now feel difficult? Do not ignore this either.

10. Recognize your own pattern: Every patient is different. Recognizing what your “normal” is, is most important.

Remember: In Heart Failure, signals appear before an emergency. These signals are caught through daily monitoring.

Let's start a discussion. What do you currently monitor among these? Write 1-2 things in the comments. Your answers will help decide future posts.
