Our surroundings which get affected by our actions have been defined as our environment. This is definitely a stand on its own because what gets affected by actions will also affect us by its own action. Just a tit for a tat situation … Our environment is our responsibility.
The concept of keeping a day aside for the world environment was decided by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. Since then it has been run by the United Nations Environment program (UNEP). The first ever Environment day was celebrated in 1973. In 1974 America hosted the second World Environment Day (WED) with the theme of “Only one Earth”.
To get the world population involved in doing something positive for the environment a lot of initiatives are being taken by UNEP along with various eco friendly organizations. Every year a country hosts the WED and keeps a theme for the same. This year the theme for the Environment day is “ Raise your voice not the sea level”. The focus of 2014 WED is on small islands and climate change and is hosted by the exotic island of Barbados. In fact for WED there is a beautiful anthem written by poet-diplomat Abhay K which was launched in June 2013 in Delhi. This anthem has been translated to eight languages of the world.
Till Date WED has campaigned on many topics keeping it as themes in an effort to save our Earth. There has been themes on making the world aware of the wastage of food, awareness about forests, biodiversity, climate change, effects of carbon dioxide, glaciers, dry lands, etc.
World Environment has been endorsed by many celebrities and world leaders, children and the media. In India, Zee news had taken an initiative called My Earth, My Duty” which aimed at planting trees and ended up entering the Limca books for a record breaking number of trees planted—more than 73 lakh trees across 250,000 villages . NDTV followed suit with Greenathon.
Environment is our protector and provider. An imbalance would turn the tables on us and make the protector that destructive force which will swipe away almost all. The World Environment is treasure and need to respect that! Rejoicing in WED and joining hands for the world environment would be the success story of WED any year with any theme.
