We have to learn to live with COVID- 19 without any fear like other ailment e.g. diabetes, hypertension or flu like H1N1. With the increase in number of asymptomatic cases anyone could be a carrier. We need to take preventive measures and at the same time with change in season, contamination of food loaded with preservatives, chemicals, which increases the microorganisms and viruses, so therefore, one need to work on strengthening ones immunity which is a first and last line of defense and plays a vital role for a strong, healthy body.
Diet, Lifestyle and immunity
Due to lock down related anxiety, over indulgence in unhealthy foods and lack of physical activity, our immunity is compromised. Diet, lifestyle and immunity are interconnected. Enhanced immune system helps in protecting the body from environmental assaults. So one needs to work on the following:
- We need to take lot of precautions and hygiene comes into play
- Avoid Smoking
- Adequate sleep and rest
- Regular exercising
- Optimum water intake
- De-stress by doing yoga, pranayam, deep-breathing
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Diet needs to be rich in nuts, seeds, plenty of fresh, seasonally and locally grown fruits and vegetables
- Avoid processed, canned foods loaded with added salt, sugar and saturated fats.
- Vitamin C rich foods like citrus fruits like lemon, orange, amla , guava etc.
- Take a probiotic like fermented drink or yoghurt or a supplement
- Stay positive
Raw foods – Our nutrient are depleted over a period of time as the soil is devoid of all necessary nutrients. Cooking food further depletes the nutrients. So try and add some raw foods to your diet along with cooked vegetables.
Power of herbs and spices – Our heritage and our culture is rich of these herbs and spices. Most of the diseases like cancer, blood sugar, blood pressure, weight loss etc are caused due to inflammation and weak immune system. Spices like turmeric, ginger, garlic, fennel, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom, coriander, tulsi etc. have therapeutic healing properties. One can make a spice powder which can be given to groups to prevent diseases and heal without taking or with minimal antibiotics. It is rich in antimicrobial, antibacterial and as well as antiviral properties.
Here’s the recipe to make the spice powder:
2 tablespoon of organic turmeric (haldi powder)
2 tablespoon of fennel seeds (sauf)
1.5 tablespoon cumin (jeera)
1 .5 tablespoon coriander seeds (dhania)
1 tablespoon of elachi powder
1 teaspoon dry ginger powder
1 tsp whole black pepper
½ teaspoon cinnamon powder
Dry roast all the ingredients except haldi and ginger powder. Ground it to a powder. Store it in a cool, dry place in an air-tight container. One can consume ¼ – ½ teaspoon in the warm water or add to your tea or milk for children or add to curd, vegetables or salads daily.
