There are some important things in the diet which every person with thyroid disease must know. Some foods can interfere with the functioning of thyroid gland and some foods may interact with the medicines one is taking. To avoid these overlaps, lets see the top 5 foods to avoid for thyroid…
Foods To Avoid For Thyroid:
1. Cruciferous vegetables (especially raw):
Vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, radish, mustard etc. contain some harmful substances known as ‘goiterogens’. Goiterogens affect functioning of thyroid gland and may make the gland under-active. Cooking destroys the goiterogens. Therefore cooking these vegetables thoroughly prevents the harm.
Soy proteins may hinder thyroid hormone absorption in the body. So, avoid over-consumption of soy-products. Especially avoid processed and purified products like soy protein isolates, supplements etc. However fermented soy products (soy sauce, miso, natto etc.) are safe to consume.
3. Coffee after medication:
Coffee affects the absorption and efficacy of thyroid hormone replacement medications. Therefore avoid coffee and any caffeine containing foods for atleast one hour after your medication.
4. Calcium and iron supplements after medication:
These can interfere with absorption of medication. So avoid calcium and iron supplements until 3 to 4 hours after you have taken your medicine.
5. Aspartame (a type of artificial sweetener):
Aspartame, an ingredient in sugar-free powders (sweeteners) can cause inflammation of thyroid gland. Read the food labels before buying any packaged food and ensure its free of aspartame. Besides these 5 foods, people with thyroid diseases who are sensitive to gluten, need to avoid gluten containing foods (wheat, rye, barley and oats).
