ORD Day is celebrated every year 29th July in India.
Oral Rehydration solution is a fluid replacement given to check and treat dehydration. Mostly dehydration occurs due to diarrhoea or due to loss of sodium and potassium. Use of ORS can help reduce the risk of death from diarrhoea by up to 93%.
ORS is quite known to every household and most of us have used it least once in their life. It is a special amalgamation of dry salts that you need to add to safe water. In the absence of ORS, one can prepare at home. Though it acts slowly, it can be helpful for the patient suffering from dehydration.
Health benefits and uses of ORS
Required for patients suffering from dehydration
ORS drink contains a proper combination of salt, sugar and water. So that, when anybody suffers from the loss of too much of glucose or salt from the body, he can easily recover substantially by using this drink. Researches show that drinking this solution helps replenish the blood with the required minerals or electrolytes, which are lost during any illness. But, it is a common belief of many people that drinking water can help in hydrating the body which is not absolutely true as water does not have the minerals that your body has lost.
Helps in treating diarrhoea
ORS is a life saving solution for babies or kids as children are more prone to conditions like diarrhoea. Take the recommended amount of ORS powder and make it a solution by adding in water. Give it to the diarrhoea patient at regular interval of time. As ORS helps maintain the water and mineral balance of the body, it is often given as the primary and also one of the most important drink for diarrhoea or any such illnesses.
Good for athletes and trainers
As athletes sweat a lot while on the tracks, they need to carry ORS in a bottle with them. It can help them feel active even after completion of the entire session.
It is always advisable to take according to the instructions of the doctor. Sometimes it may cause mild nausea and vomiting. Besides these, the person may have dizziness, unusual weakness, swelling of ankles/feet, mental/mood changes (such as irritability, restlessness), seizures etc. If such effects persist or get worse, consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
