Grapes are packed with antioxidants like flavonoids, resveratrol (more in black grapes) and vitamin C. Grapes also contain a good amount of fibers and vitamin K. 1. Choosing grapes: Choose grapes that are ripe and eat them only in the right season (starting from March). If available, prefer black grapes with seeds. Buy organic grapes if available.
2. Washing grapes: Wash grapes thoroughly before eating. They are loaded with pesticides and other chemicals. Soak grapes in water-vinegar mixture or water – baking soda mixture (1-liter water + 2 tsp vinegar or 2 tsp of baking soda) for 15 minutes and then wash with tap water.
3. Quantity of grapes: Limit the number of grapes to not more than 1 small bowl at a time. 1 small bowl of grapes (20-25 grapes) contains 15 grams of carbohydrates. Eating large quantities of grapes can raise blood sugar in people with diabetes. Some may also get side effects such as diarrhea, stomach upset, cough, sore throat, headache, and infections after consuming large quantities of grapes. People taking blood thinners should limit the number of grapes in the diet.
4. Choking hazard: Grapes can be a cause of choking in children below 5 years of age. Cut whole grapes in slices or quarters before giving it to children below 3 years. For children above 3 years, instruct them to chew the grapes thoroughly and accompany them while they are eating grapes.
