During this COVID pandemic lockdown, let’s talk about diabetes care at home
Following 5 pointers assure safe diabetes management:
Fasting sugar range of 70-100ml/dL
Post – prandial sugars 140-180ml/dL
HbA1C between 6 to 8% essentially.
Regular checkup of blood sugars at intervals with recommended medication and mealtimes is necessary.
DON’T CHANGE OR STOP MEDICATION WITHOUT EXPERT’S CONSULTATION.
When going out for exercise is restricted; staying active is necessary. Exercise enhances the immunity levels and also induces feel good state of mind which is helpful in sugar control.
In-house activities like simple yogic movements, gentle stretches, chair exercises and breathing exercises can be practiced.

Planning meals with home foods that will help maintain blood sugars as well as provide extra-immunity to prevent any infection.
Starting the day with hot drinks made with Indian herbs and spices (commonly available in the kitchen) followed by good protein breakfast.
Every meal should include fibrous whole grains or millets with one pulse protein and thick skinned vegetable if available (peeled and cooked) along with dairy protein as well. Mid-eating can be covered with flakes, biscuits, nuts.
CARBOHYDTRATES OF DIFFERENT GI (Glycemic Index) CHOSEN AS PER THE BSL RANGE at 3 MEALS RESPECTIVELY.
INCLUSION OF FRUITS ALSO DEPENDS ON BSL RANGE.
GOOD HYDRATION AND ALKALINE FOODS ARE THE KEY WORDS.

Rest, at physical and psychological level, not just sleep is most essential factor in good control of diabetes. Proper relaxation with listening to music, humming or chanting mantras helps minimize panic or anxiety which may trigger the sugars during this crucial situation
