Earlier Depression was associated with adults only. Very few percent of children,under
the age of 12yrs faced depression, according to the psychiatrists. But now this is not the case, the percentage of children going into depression has increased and the age has decreased. There are many causes of depression seen in children now-a-days.
What is Depression?
It is an overwhelming feeling of sadness and lack of self- worth which disturbs the child totally. Childhood depression is different from the regular mood swings which occur. Just because the child seems to be low and sad doesn’t really mean that he is in depression. But if these symptoms are persistent, disturbing the child’s emotional state it may indicate a need for help.
Causes of Depression
Causes in children are very uncertain. There are many causes such as:
- Looking a loved one (friendship, family)
- Family Problems (Splitting of parents)
- Decrease social acceptance
These are the few very commonly noticed causes. Some children are very resilient to difficulties when compared to other, some cope up fact but some don’t. Nature of the child also matters. Studies say that genetics and family also explain why some children are more susceptible to depression.
Symptoms of Depression:
Many symptoms may be ignored as they won’t be recognized as symptoms of depression. Here are some common symptoms of depression seen in children:
- Feeling of sadness, unhappy
- Fatigue/ low energy
- Sudden poor performance at school
- Social withdrawal
- Low self-esteem
- Losing interest in favorite hobbies
- Major weight changes
- Contemplating suicide
- Spending time alone
Parents should carefully look for these symptoms and can recognize it in early stage. Discussing issues with the child in detail, taking them in confidence, will help parents to solve it.
If recognized in later stage, seek help of a psychiatrist to treat it.
