Few days back I have attended one angioplasty with Dr. Ravindra L. Kulkarni. Patient was just 24 year old dude, having no positive medical history or other risk factors of heart attack except heavy smoking. One of his relative asked me, “can young people have heart attack ?”
Answer is definitely “YES”. Now a days our lifestyle pattern has changed so much that we see many young case of heart attacks.
“Interventional cardiologist who reopens blocked arteries with procedures like Angioplasty / Stenting – commonly see patients in their 40’s & sometimes in their 30’s too, who arrive at hospital & are having heart attacks. These patients sometimes do not have the “classic” risk factors for heart disease, such as Hypertension , Diabetes etc but even smoking itself can be a risk factor for heart attack.” Dr Kulkarni added.
Just because someone is not “old” that does not mean that symptoms such as chest pain, dyspnea are not signs of heart attack. If you are young – whether male or female , do not let a perception that heart attacks happen to older people. It is better to have visit with cardiologist & let them decide. Last but not the least, go for regular screening checkups at the age of 25 – 30 years to know the risk. You can go for following test to know your heart disease risk:
- Health Risk Assessment
- Blood Pressure
- Blood Sugar Test
- Lipid profile
- Stress test
