Cholesterol is a soft, wax like substance found in all part of your body. Your body requires some amount of it to work properly. Some types of cholesterol are considered as good & some are considered as bad.

Lipid profile/ panel measures:

  1. Total cholesterol
  2. Triglyceride
  3. HDL ( High density Lipoprotein) – Good Cholesterol
  4. LDL ( Low density lipoprotein)- Bad cholesterol
  5. VLDL ( Very low density lipoprotein)

How to prepare for test?

You should be fasting for 12-14 hrs before test. You may have water.

Why the test is performed?

Cholesterol test are done to help you & your doctor better understand your risk for heart disease, stroke, and other problems caused by blocked arteries.

Some guidelines recommended having the first lipid test done at the age 20.

But people having diabetes, heart disease, stroke, blood pressure should always (yearly)  have cholesterol done, no matter what their age.

Normal ranges of Lipid profile:

The ideal values depend on whether you have heart disease, diabetes or other risk factors. Your healthcare professional can tell you what your goal should be.

Total Cholesterol Desirable < 200 mg/dL
  Borderline 200-240 mg/dL
  Undesirable >240 mg/dl
Triglycerides Desirable < 150 mg/dL
  Borderline 150-199 mg/dL
  Undesirable >200 mg/dL
HDL Desirable >60 mg/dL
  Borderline 40-59 mg/dL
  Undesirable <40 mg/dL
LDL Desirable <130 mg/dL
Borderline 130-160  mg/dl
Undesirable > 160  mg/dl
VLDL Normal < 40 mg/dL


What abnormal results mean?

Abnormal results may be a sign that you are at increased risk for heart disease, stroke & problems caused by blocked arteries. If your cholesterol is too high, you may need treatment to lower your the levels. This may include medication & lifestyle changes.

What are the Good & Bad cholesterol?

Good Cholesterol:  It is good because it help to get rid of excess cholesterol to transferring them from the blood vessels to the liver for excretion.

Bad Cholesterol: It is bad because it deposits more cholesterol in the blood transferring it from the blood vessels to the liver causing more plaque& dangerous of high BP &heart attacks.
